Learning about Storyboarding

Introduction to Storyboarding

In our first introduction to storyboarding, our teacher showed us the storyboard for the film 'Psycho'. We analyzed the storyboard of the iconic shower scene, and after, we watched the clip itself.

Above is the Shower Scene from 'Psycho'

I began to understand the importance and significance of storyboarding, and how it makes filming scenes more efficient. It's essentially a map of the scene and shot.

Creating our own Storyboard for a TV show opening sequence

After being introduced to storyboarding, our teacher assigned us a TV show. We were to watch the opening sequence of the TV show and storyboard it. I was assigned the TV 'Little America' The shows opening sequence consisted of wide-shot images of signposts all over America, with the text edited to show actors' names, etc...
I visited Art of the Title and watched the opening sequence. The opening sequence itself consisted of 19 shots, but I storyboarded only 6 of those shots.

Opening Sequence storyboarded by me

The opening sequence gave a unique overview of the show itself. The old pictures and its layout gave it a sense of nostalgia, giving us the idea that this is a show about past memories and personal stories. The use of sign boards and diners gave it a very Americanized feeling, and since little America is a show about the stories of immigrants, it is quite a fitting opening sequence.
